Meet Mark Judson – Candidate for NC District 7

Mark Judson, CPA, CGMA, MBA

Mark Judson is a retired Army Officer and a Combat Veteran. He spent a total of 21 years in the U.S. Army between the active and reserve components. Mark enlisted in the Army at the age of 17, and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant before attending the grueling Officer Candidate School (OCS) program. Mark served as the Class President for his OCS class and was a Distinguished Military Graduate of the course. In 2004 Mark deployed to Iraq for a year in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and retired in 2006 with the rank of Captain. The highlight of Mark’s military career was serving as the Unit Commander for a battery of self-propelled 155MM Howitzers.

Mark has been an Accountant for over twenty years. He spent three years at a “Big 4” Public Accounting firm as well as working at a Regional Firm and also with Sole Proprietors. Mark has rounded out his business acumen by serving as a Corporate Controller for three years as well.

In addition to his Accounting Experience, Mark has worked as a Financial Advisor for two Fortune 100 Companies advising his clients on all aspects of life-long financial planning.

Mark is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts/Dartmouth and earned an MBA at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC. Mark holds a CPA certificate, and has previously held licenses as a General Securities Representative (Series 7 and 63), Financial Advisor (Series 65), Health and Life Insurance, and Long-Term Care Insurance sales in North Carolina. Additionally, Mark was one of the first accounting professionals in the US to earn the Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) credential reflecting his proficiency in Controllership/Management accounting.

Mark is active in support of veterans and is a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is a past Commander of a VFW Post as well as serving in other Officer positions for the VFW Post.

As an advocate for higher education and the Community College system, Mark served as an Adjunct Professor at a Local Community College teaching business courses to 1st and 2nd year students. While this activity pulled Mark away from his core CPA Business, Mark considers passing on knowledge to the next generation as both a virtue and a moral imperative.

Mark has performed in theater productions throughout his life and also dabbles in Stand Up and Improvisational Comedy. In Mark’s first public Stand Up comedy performance, he did 14 minutes in front of more than 300 people. Mark likened the experience to the excitement of being on a roller coaster and was immediately hooked.

In addition to his study of all things military throughout his life, Mark has also spent over five years studying Martial Arts. He has trained in American Kempo, Shaolin Kempo, and Tang Soo Do. Mark earned a Brown Belt in Kempo and a Red Belt in Tang Soo Do.

Mark met his wife Anita when they both attended an Improvisational Comedy workshop in 2007. They married in 2015 on the family farm in Indiana where Anita was raised. Together, they have engaged in adventures ranging from training in Karate to travelling the West Indies. Mark and Anita consider themselves to be “joined at the soul”. Anita is a graduate of Purdue University, has earned an MBA from Rollins College, and has earned a Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

When the weather is nice, Mark and Anita hit the road on his Harley Davidson and enjoy exploring the beautiful country roads of North Carolina.
